TestsPeriodically, the Manhattan Kansas Kennel Club offers to the community the opportunity to qualify their dogs through different organizational programs. Currently, MKKC offers the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test, the AKC Canine Good Citizen Test, AKC Community Canine Test (CGC Advanced), the AKC Canine Good Citizen Urban Test (CGCU), the AKC Trick Dog Test, and the Therapy Dog International (TDI, Inc.) Therapy Dog Evaluation Test. S.T.A.R. Puppy TestThe AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test is administered at the end of a 7 week-long S.T.A.R./Super Puppy Program designed to teach purebred and mixed-breed puppy owners how to socialize, train, provide appropriate activity, and be responsible for their new dog. Each owner and puppy are evaluated by a qualified C.G.C. Evaluator on 20 different behaviors. After passing the test, each puppy and owner will be awarded a medal, frameable certificate, as well as several other items from AKC. More information about the S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is available from the AKC website. Canine Good Citizen TestThe AKC Canine Good Citizen Test, AKC Community Canine Test (CGC Advanced), the AKC Canine Good Citizen Urban Test (CGCU), and the AKC Trick Dog Test are offered as part of MKKC's Basic Obedience class. After completing their training classes, interested owners of purebred or mixed breed dogs can have their dogs evaluated free of charge. If successful, the owners can send their passing evaluation form to AKC to receive a personalized CGC certificate. The test is comprised of ten elements that evaluate a dog's ability to behave mannerly in several different situations. The AKC website provides more detailed information about the Canine Good Citizen Program. Other AKC TestingMKKC offers training and other testing through AKC including the Community Canine (CGCA), the CGCU, and Trick Dog. Therapy Dog Evaluation TestThe Therapy Dog Evaluation Test is part one of Therapy Dog International's registration process. Dogs registered through TDI visit care homes and other facilities to entertain and comfort those in need. The TDI Evaluation Test includes several components that evaluate a dog's behavior around medical equipment as well as the dog's willingness to work with different people, including children and people with infirmities. For more information about Therapy Dog International, Inc., please visit their website. The TDI Evaluation Test is offered periodically. Pre-registration and a $5.00 testing fee is required. If you are interested in this program, please contact Susan Keller (MKKC Training Director/TDI Certified Evaluator) at [email protected]. |
